According to Stats SA, in the first quarter of 2019, the employment rate in South Africa showed an increase, where 63.4% of the total number of unemployed persons are youth (aged 15 – 34 years). Further findings showed that unemployed graduates were much less when compared to persons who only studied up to Matric or less.

In light of these findings, it is clear that education is still very much the key that unlocks further opportunities. There are a number of reasons why someone finds themselves in a position where they can’t go to a tertiary institution for further education. As such, most people feel that they have missed the boat to a qualification and a better career. This is not true.

There are many options available for further learning in line with the National Qualification Framework (NQF). You can enroll with an accredited skills development provider for skills programs and leadership that will lead to a National Certificate. Learnerships are workplace obtained qualifications – which means it is possible to further your education and get a qualification at your work.

As an employee, you can approach your employer to send you on training for career development or to sign you up for available leadership programs. There are benefits for both the employee and employer when it comes to leadership.
